inno-spec GmbH founder and GM Oliver Grass was part of the SPIE Photonics West industry event, “What is Next in the Analysis of Biological Samples with Spectral Imaging Systems?” on January 26, 2025, presented by Epic Photonics.

Researchers in biology and life sciences have devised an impressive number of strategies to address the complex process of studying biological matter. Spectral Imaging is a promising optical technique, due to the combination of spectroscopy and imaging characteristics. Forestry and agriculture management have already benefitted from spectral imaging systems’ advantages, but there are new and interesting applications such as tumor detection, monitoring moisture content and chromaticity of food, diagnosis of skin diseases, or livestock feed quality. These applications will require new detectors with better efficiency and accuracy, dedicated optical components, and improved data analysis to obtain the right information from these critical samples. In this discussion, panelists talked about how industrial partners are addressing these new requirements and future challenges.
